A band with four guitars can only be described as one thing: a guitar band. Not a huge revelation, but Hellvar fits the mold in every way possible. In addition to the four guitar players, they sprinkle in a bass, keys and one killer drummer allowing Hellvar to shoot out what can only be described as a “wall of distortion.” Needless to say, Phil Spector would be proud.  Influences range from My Bloody Valentine to Cocteau Twins and lead singer Heida exploits a dynamic vocal range beneath a staggering amount of feedback, which is nothing if not impressive. Even in Hressó’s chilly back patio venue, there were plenty of power chords and refreshingly loose stage banter to keep the crowd energized. New single “Nowhere” had people bobbing their heads before the band got towards the end of their set, concluding: “This is our worship Satan song.” Adorned in face paint with an upside down cross on her forehead, Heida and Co. looked the part, and more importantly: played the part.

HELLVAR
Over rock’n’roll gesproken: bij Hellvar, een sextet dat netjes over evenveel vrouwen als mannen beschikt, hadden vooral de gitaren het voor het zeggen. Soms zelfs met vier stuks tegelijk. In de groep, die tien jaar geleden in Berlijn ontstond, draait alles rond de flamboyante zangeres Hei∂a en snaarkastijder Elvar, maar sinds ze er een extra chanteuse bij kreeg en ook een bevlogen tweede gitariste inlijfde, klink haar sound nog voller en krachtiger dan vroeger. Het concert van Hellvar, waarin al enkele nummers werden gelucht die op haar derde cd zullen staan, hield het midden tussen energieke postpunk en melodieuze hardrock. Niks nieuws onder de zon dus, maar met de overtuigingskracht van een door de wol geverfde straatpredikant. Een uppercut, recht uit het Walhalla.

Review of Hellvar @ Airwaves '13 by Bob Cluness

Energy is something that you couldn’t say HELLVAR lacked. Mind you this wasn’t too hard. They just understood that to create a bit of noise, all they needed was a drummer who seemed ready to kick the fuck out of his drums, and to employ what seemed like 27 guitarists on stage. It was the first moment of the night I had to whip out the trusty old ear plugs.
There’s a certain amount of comfort and familiarity with Hellvar for me (This is the third time I’ve ended up reviewing them at Airwaves), and their set of ’90s style post-grunge rock  was at once both recognisable and welcoming, playing classics from their canon such as “Ding an Sich,” “Anna Amma,” and “Falsetto” (AKA their T.A.T.U song). On stage they seemed brilliant gawky, but totally into what they were doing, especially singer Heiða, all decked out in her melted Halloween make up. They did premiere some new music, one track in particular having a really brawny and propulsive rhythm section. The small but hardcore group of fans (Hellvar-ettes? Hellvar-ites?) down at the front loved it.

Formed in 2003 in Berlin by singer/guitarist Heiða and guitarist Elvar, out of pure boredom, Hellvar made “Bat out of Hellvar” in the year 2007. They mostly used drum-machines and electric guitars and performed in that simple, almost naive, way. Back in Iceland they added a bass-player, and another guitar-player, Alexandra, but kept the drum-machine. They toured in the US, Germany and in China with that setup, and it was only in 2010 that live drumming was added. Now a 5-piece, recordings were started and in September 2011 the long awaited second album “Stop that noise” came out, and it had a noticeably rockier sound to it. In December 2011 Hellvar recorded an acoustic version of the best songs of their two albums, and it was called “Noise that stopped” and only 200 copies were made. Since that, Hellvar has had a lot of people quit and other people join. Bass-player Sverrir moved to Denmark and Haukur “the murderer” was added (check out his other band Morðingjarnir/The Murderers), Óli drummer quit, and Andri was added (check out his other band Monterey). Other original members stayed in Hellvar. Sometimes this girl called Aðalheiður sings with them too. When that happens Hellvar is a six-membered 3 girl/3 boy indie-band with big smiles, nice vibes, good character, and lots and lots of fine songs. On the subject of fine songs, new ones are in the making this year, and they might come out next year, if Hellvar-members get of their behinds!

Heiða and Berglind – moms and sons on Tour around Iceland 2013

Heiða and Berglind – moms and sons

The musicians Heiða Eiríks and Berglind Ágústsdóttir will go on a small tour around the country, beginning of June. They both play original music, that can be catagorized as experimental, alternative popmusic, but they aproach it in different ways. Heiða uses only a folk-guitar and her voice and plays slow, melting folk-music, whereas Berglind uses a computer and a mic and plays experimental party-electro.
They decided to travel around Iceland for one week and take their sons, 11 and 13, along with them. They also bring music in casettes and cd´s that they intend to promote and sell.

Berglind Ágústsdóttir is an artist and a musician and just finished her third album called „I am Your Girl“. She will play song from that album in the concerts, as well as some more songs. Previously she released „Fish Number One“ in the year 1997, „Friends Save the Day“ in 2010, and the vocal remix-cd „Never too late for love“ in 2010. She has also collaborated with many other bands and contributed to their albums, as well as putting on numerous exibitions. She just started a series of casettes with musical experiments and two are already published.
Heiða Eiríks has been using the name Heida the troubadour since 1989 when she started performing alone with her guitar. Heida troubadour is working on a solo-album with material that can be performed with one voice and one folk-guitar. She has, since 1994, released quite a few cd‘s with the bands Unun, Heiða & Heiðingjarnir, Ruddinn and Hellvar, as well as a few soloprojects. Her last album was the Hellvar-album „Stop that Noise“, released in 2011. She is currently working on a new children‘s album with Dr. Gunni.

What's up with Hellvar? Update of the History of Hellvar

What's update
Elvar is working on a lot of essays for his studies in international politics. He will be done in a month or so, and then Hellvar could start gigging more. Heiða is starting work on the new children's album with Dr. Gunni. They will be recording this summer. Alexandra went to Belgium for a while and we asked our friend Aðalheiður Arna Björgvinsdóttir to sing the other vocal-bits. She also has a solo project called Death of a Scoobafish. She was so good, Hellvar wanted to keep her and next step would be to rehearse new material with her singing, as well as perhaps playing keyboards.

Alexandra is still in the band too, of course. On drums we now have Andri Geir Árnason, he replaced Birkir Fjalar Viðarson. Andri is also in Hljómsveitin Ég and Monterey, but has in the past played in Geirfuglarnir. Haukur Morðingi is working in visir.is full time, and is still our bass-player. The last time Hellvar played live was @ Paddy's 10 year anniversary gig on Thursday last week.
They dropped the computer during live-shows at this moment, so Hellvar is pure indie-rock!!!

Now it has been 10 years since Paddy's opened, almost in the middle of the street @ Hafnargata 38. Paddy's welcomed young, ambitious musicians. Many bands have taken their first public steps on the stage at Paddy's and through the years, Paddy's has been the cradle that Rocks Kef City.
On the 4th - 6th of April 10 years of Rock'n Roll @ Paddy's was celebrated with the bands that we can, without a doubt, call "our bands". Some of the bands came back together for this occasion only so we will definitely witness some legendary comebacks.
